Scope and Contents

The collection consists of reports, publications, and studies related to the Dallas Museum of Natural History. Included in the collection are bound copies of operational studies conducted at the request of the museum by the University of Dallas, Graduate School of Business.

Founded in 1925 by Dallas civic leaders as the Texas Museum of Natural History, the museum was reorganized in the 1930s as the Dallas Museum of Natural History.  In anticipation of the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition, the Dallas Park Board assumed control and governance of the museum and erected a new facility for the museum at Fair Park.  The Dallas Museum of Natural History is the only public collection-based, research driven, natural history museum in the region, earning Smithsonian Institution Affiliate Museum status in 1999.  The museum's purpose is to collect, preserve, and interpret the flora and fauna of Dallas and the surrounding areas so that representative specimens of the natural environment can be enjoyed in an educational way by the general public and can be studied in a scientific manner by the scholarly community.  In 2006 the Dallas Museum of Natural History merged with two other Fair Park museums, The Science Place (established 1946) and the Dallas Children's Museum (established 1995), to form the Museum of Nature and Science.
