Scope and Contents

Abstracts, planning materials, and related items documenting the history of street paving, widening, and repair by the City of Dallas from 1889-1930.

Collection documents early street paving and widening in the City of Dallas, Texas. Streets in Dallas were first paved in 1884, initially with bois'd arc wood bricks. The first road in Dallas County paved in the "macadam" fashion (crushed stone, gravel, and rolling) was Cedar Springs Road in 1884. Paving was accomplished by numerous departments and divisions until the process was consolidated under the Public Works Department in 1931. Today new sidewalks are planned and executed by the Engineering and Construction Services division of the Department of Public Works. Repair and maintenance is performed by the Department of Street Services. Collection contains field notes, cost estimates, specifications, property owner cost assessments, abstracts, and blueprints. One folder contains early ordinances and resolutions regulating and authorizing street paving.
