Scope and Contents

Collection consists of correspondence, legal documents, and blueprints related to attempts to pave streets in the Exposition Park neighborhood of Dallas, Texas.

In 1904 the Phoenix Land Company along with property owners in Exposition Park petitioned the City of Dallas to have certain streets in the Exposition Park area improved.  If the city agreed to pay a certain percentage of the improvement costs, the property owners would agree to pay the balance for having Second Avenue, Hickory Street, and Williams Street paved from Exposition Park to Commerce Street, connecting the area known as the "Circus Grounds" to the city center. Proposed improvements included macadam street surfaces and wooden curbs, as well as the installation of gas, water, and electric lines. Legal disagreements prevented the parties from coming to an agreement until the early 1920s.
