Collection consists of black and white photographic prints documenting the implemenation of street lighting throughout the City of Dallas between 1949 and 1968.  The majority of photographs were made by commercial photographer G. A. McAfee, commercial photographer. Others were taken by City of Dallas staff.

The collection documents a project of the Dallas Department of Street Services to improve lighting on major city streets and in parks. It includes photos taken before and after lighting projects were completed.  Typically taken from the center of city streets as well as in the city's parks, these photos document lighting improvements for the streets, parks, and neighborhoods of Dallas.

The City of Dallas Department of Street Services is responsible for the construction and maintenance of City of Dallas streets. Its major services include street and alley pothole repair, lighting, large-scale street and alley repair, storm sewer cleaning and repair, operation and maintenance of the Trinity River Flood Control System, cleaning and mowing of rights-of-way, medians, street islands and surplus lots, and annual street and alley condition inventories.
